Garage-Sale Tips

  • Plan ahead - Give yourself at least two weeks to prepare.
  • Check the calendar - Don't schedule the sale during a school break or on a holiday weekend.
  • Share a tag sale - If you have only a few items, hold a joint sale with your neighbors.  You'll attract more customers that way.
  • Advertise - Post notices on bulletin boards, place ads in newspapers, and set out directional signs.  Check ordinances on posting signs and take down what you put up.
  • Clean up - Clean the items so they'll look and smell their best.
  • Get change - Stop at the bank for several $1 and $5 bills, as well as $10 in change.
  • Organize - Group similar items in the same area, placing electrical appliances close to an outlet so that they can be tested.
  • Price it right - Don't overprice the merchandise.
  • Reduce - If something is not selling, lower the price.
  • Donate - Don't take what is left unsold back inside.  Put it in your car and drop it off at a local charity (be sure to get a receipt for tax purposes).
